The History of Steelville First Assembly of God

On August 4th, 1933, Rev. J. F. Massey moved his family to Steelville, Mo. it was here that he began a revival with Bro. Oscar Fox at the courthouse. Although there had been others in the past, this was the only Pentecostal message being preached in Steelville.

The first Pentecostal message was preached in the 1920's Bro. Bro. S. K. Biffle and Bro. Charles Pepper. then over a span of about 10 years several other men preached, such as Labe Garrison, Roy Armstead, Bro. Ackerman, the heady brothers and perhaps more.

it was during this time that Mr. & Mrs. Charley Nichols were saved. Mr. Nichols played a big part in getting the church established in Steelville.

The revival Bro. Massey and Bro. Fox held lasted for five or six weeks, and 33 souls were saved during that time. Concluding this revival, one of the largest baptismal services in the history of the church was held at the Whittenburg Creek.

It was because of this that Bro. Massey decided to remain in Steelville and start the church. The old school building was rented (where the Community Building now stands) for a church and living quarters for the Massey's. Everything had to be made before they could have church. Bro. Arch hauled lumber to the site and Bro. Massey, along with his two sons, John and Joe, built the pews. Bro. Charley Nichols built the pulpit.

The Sunday School Department was organized with Bro. Lon Kitchell as the Superintendent. they worshipped here from 1933 until May of 1935, when the old school building was condemned and torn down.

Br. Massey decided to leave Steelville at this time. Bro. JJ Ivie took his place. They received permission to use the courthouse again for their Sunday services.

On June 5, 1935, the church was set in order with the General Council of the Assemblies of God by our District Presbyter, Rev. Ed Cockman, pastor of the Sullivan church. Bro. JJ Ivie was elected Pastor. Deacons were John Massey, Val Hadley and Charley Nichols. Kathryn Massey was elected Secretary and Treasurer. Kathryn was also C. A. President of the active youth group.

After the church was set into order, plans to build a new house of worship were started. Many people contributed to this project. Bro. Lester Giles from St. Louis bought the ground for $100. Bro. Val Hadley and Charley Nichols bought the old canning factory in the lower part of town for $110. It was torn down and hauled by wagon to the church property. Many businessmen donated money and many people donated labor. Bro. Ivie and Bro. Nichols were the main carpenters and under their guidance the new 28 ft. x 50 ft. church was erected.

On Sunday, October 5, 1935, the first service took place in the new building. there were 55 in Sunday School and the membership was growing.

November 9, 1935, Bro. Ivie resigned as Pastor.

Others who filled the pulpit were:

Rev. Elmer Baker 1935 - 1937

Rev. H. E. Jenkins 1937 - 1940

Rev. Edward Cockman 1940 - 1943

Rev. Lonnie Webb 1998 - 2000

Rev. Jerry Beers 2000 - present

Through the leadership and guidance of Rev. Joe Massey, the new facility in which we sit today was built. On Sunday, December 9, 1973, the church was dedicated to the Lord.

It was while Rev. Jerry Harris was here as pastor that the new educational wing was built. This added 10 classrooms, a new nursery, Sunday School office and Choir room to the present facility.

In May of 1998, the church endured hardship, but praise be to God, it has overcome the obstacles. Today it is a thriving work and continues the vision that was started so many years ago! In 1999, while Rev. Lonnie Webb was the pastor, the church burnt the mortgage on the educational wing!

Pastor Jerry Beers continues to lead the church toward God's vision. Jerry and his wife Shelley have been raise in this church, and we are very happy and proud to have them leading us.
